Free chickens!

Finally the chickens are in their yard!!! We have 24 of them, 12 like the inside of the hutch and 12 like the underside! Next year we are not going to have them inside the house! I am so glad to get them out of here! ugh the smell! Next year they will start in the garage. Well Leo is wanting to go to bed and I need help getting the chickens in the hutch...I am half tempted to leave them out to see how they fare, but they are stupid and I am afraid will get cold and die without getting in the house! It is nearly 1030 and 74 but there are storm clouds rolling in. I will let everyone know tomorrow how they did in their first night outside!

B.O.W. in Alaska

This past weekend I went to a Becoming an Outdoor Woman retreat. It was a blast!!! I got to cook in dutch ovens...I personally made a 13 pound roast turkey, (the best I have EVER had, and one that I plan on making for Thanksgiving this year!) A pecan pie, and green bean casserole! We also made lasagna, pineapple upside down cake, breads, and TONS more! The next morning I went rappelling and on the zip line! The first rappel was from 28 feet and the second from 43 feet, the zip line was at 48 feet! That afternoon I went kayaking....and figured out exactly what kind of kayak I am going to save for! The last class for me was back pack chef. Amazing classes, amazing people and amazing weekend! We had nice cabins to stay in and the food was incredible as was the weather! I am already looking forward to the next time! Maybe a winter one.

Wordless Wednesday

Tyler to the rescue!

I saw out the window a small fluttering object on the ground...."Oh no" I said to Ty "one of the baby chick-a-dee's has tried to fly and it isnt ready yet!" Tyler immediately lept up, "I will get it Mom it's ok!" And that is exactly what he did! He picked it up and...."ugh it peed it on me!"

then he laughed! Carefully he brought it back to the tree and the nest....

And it stood dazed for a second on the branch then it cheeped....an answer came from the bird house and it tried to scramble back up the tree its small wings going wildly but it couldnt quite get there....

Finally with a helpful finger it was reunited with its family! It was an amazing experience for both Ty and I. He is my hero!

chicken update and yard update

The chickens have doubled in size! They have gotten most of their wing feathers and little tail feathers. Cam and I compared the three runts to the rest so he can see the differences between them and how they grow.

finally I planted the strawberries Dean and Nora gave me! Dean rototilled the plot for me last Tuesday and dropped off the plants then too. They have been sitting in rubbermade containers ever since until today!
One of the cats knocked the bird house out of the tree last night. I figured that all the baby chick-dees had died but Leo put it back into the tree and surprisingly this evening I heard the babies and the mom and dad were flying in and out like nothing was wrong! I was so amazed! Here are some more pictures of the chickens...I cant believe how fast they grow! soon they can go outside!!! Yeah!
