slideshow FAIRBANKS - The Arctic Lions Tier I Midget U16 youth hockey team captured the state championship by winning four straight games last weekend in Anchorage.

The Arctic Lions went 3-0 in the roundrobin portion of the tournament. The Fairbanks all-star team went on to defeat the South Central Wolves 3-2 to claim the championship trophy and advance to the Pacific District Championships on March 18-21 in San Jose, Calif.

Players on the team are Sam Bratten, Dylan Canoy, Anders Carlson, Kaz Cizmowski, Brandon Edson, Logan Henne, Tyler Keturi, Taylor Laiti, Jared Linnell, Ian Morey, Tayler Munson, Hank Parra, John Teets, Logan Wendling, Stephon Williams, Zach Winner, Colton Wolter, Jacob Wolter and Justin Woods.

The squad is coached by Rob Proffitt, with Richard Mousseau serving as the assistant coach.

Williams was in goal for all four tournament games, making 81 saves and recording a shutout.

Colton Wolter scored twice and Linnell picked up a goal in the championship game against the South Central Wolves on Sunday afternoon in Anchorage. Munson assisted on all three goals, while Woods had two helpers and Linnell had one.

The round-robin portion of the tournament began Friday with a 9-0 victory against the Anchorage North Stars as Williams stopped 24 shots.

Linnell had four goals and Munson registered two. Canoy, Wendling and Jacob Wolter also had goals. Munson had two assists, while Jacob Wolter, Woods, Linnell, Keturi, Wendling and Colton Wolter had one apiece.

The second game Saturday morning was the most exciting as Linnell scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining in a 5-4 victory against the South Central Wolves.

Linnell and Parra each had two goals and Woods had one.

The final game Saturday night was a 9-1 win against the Alaska All-Stars.

Cizmowski lit the lamp four times and Linnell scored twice.

Henne, Bratten and Munson also scored goals. Woods had three assists, while Bratten, Munson and Colton Wolter had two apiece. Linnell, Laiti, Parra, Keturi andCanoy also had helpers.

WASILLA -- After the first period elapsed with barely a scoring chance for either side Thursday afternoon, Lathrop goaltender Stephon Williams figured the opener of the Class 4A state hockey championships was destined to turn on one flick of a stick.

Williams is not just the reigning state player of the year, but a decent prognosticator too. He stopped 28 shots and the defending state champion Malemutes used Colton Wolter's strike three minutes into the third period to beat South 1-0 at Menard Memorial Ice Arena.

Lathrop prospered by virtue of Williams' excellence and a largely fail-safe system that favored smarts and sensibility over risk and delivered the Malemutes a state-tournament victory over the Wolverines for the second straight season.

Time and again, when a Malemute puck carrier hit the red line, the cry from Lathrop's bench was, "Deep! Deep!'' -- an instruction that reinforced the tactic of dumping the puck deep in South's end and, at worst, making the Wolverines go 200 feet to threaten Williams. The Malemutes also took icings whenever they needed them and they routinely chipped the puck from their end by lifting it off the plexiglass and to safety in the neutral zone.

"We just wanted to make the simple plays,'' Williams said. "That's what we've been focusing on and we're peaking at the right time with it. If they beat us, they've got to beat us with speed and talent.''

South, the regular-season Cook Inlet Conference champion, owned an advantage in depth -- the Wolverines dressed the maximum 18 skaters to the Malemutes' 13. The Wolverines also owned the upper hand in skill.

Still, they barely mustered more than a handful of high-quality scoring chances from below the hash marks and they hardly sniffed a rebound opportunity. Meanwhile, the Malemutes, who do not have a single senior among their 16 players, proved patient and sound defensively against a team that beat them 3-0 earlier this season.

"I'm gonna take the blame on this,'' said South coach Mike Ashley. "We put a fore-checking system in halfway through the season, and we could pin teams in their end and get three or four goals.

"All of a sudden, you get to tournament time and everyone plays their Grade A game, and it's tough to score goals. We didn't generate any offense.''

Not that the Malemutes peppered South goalie Trevor Gutierrez (17 saves). But they did cash in when their best chance surfaced early in the third period.

Wolter forced a turnover in the neutral zone and carried the puck down left wing and behind the net before backhanding a centering pass to Whitney Wivoda in the left circle. Wivoda's shot rang off the right post and directly to Wolter, who had pivoted into the right circle. With Gutierrez out of his net -- he had scrambled to cut down Wivoda's angle -- Wolter was left with a gimme.

"You can't miss an empty net,'' Wolter said.

South enjoyed a power play about three minutes after Wolter's goal. Yet Williams made an easy glove save on Kyle Head's slapper from the right circle. And Torgen Soderlund blocked a shot, and Dawson Hebard blocked one shot and one pass, to keep the Wolverines at bay.

South pulled Gutierrez for an extra attacker in the last 76 seconds, but to no avail. Williams stopped Jake Onstott's shot from the left point with his stick and flashed his left pad to rebuff Kyle Simmons' deft deflection.

When the horn sounded to signal game's end, Williams lifted his arms in celebration, and his teammates swarmed him.

"We wanted to prove we're still the team to beat,'' Williams said.

Cameron was standing on a block at school and fell causing a black eye when he fell into another block....then Tyler totalled his truck as he drove to school yesterday. He was coming around a corner "big bend" hit a bump and went into a skid then as he slid across the highway his wheel caught the fresh snow and started to roll as he went into the ditch. The truck is totalled but Tyler walked away with minor cuts and bruises. Thankfully his Angel had him wrapped in his wings and he is safe. I am hugging all my boys closer and thanking God for potecting them all.

North Pole wins

The North Pole Patriots wrapped up a three-game road trip to the Mat-Su Valley with a 3-2 victory against the Palmer Moose on Saturday afternoon.

Tyler Keturi, Jordan Pascoe and Hank Parra accounted for the three North Pole goals. The Patriots jumped out to a 2-0 lead and the Patriots led 3-1 before Palmer closed the gap in the third period.

North Pole went 2-1 on the trip.

“All-in-all, it was a good weekend for us,” said North Pole coach Rod Avery. “Coming off the Christmas break, I thought it was a pretty successful weekend for us.”

North Pole is back in action at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday against the Lathrop Malemutes at the UAF Patty Center.

Thieves take police car on wild drive along frozen Alaska river
by Rachel D'Oro / The Associated Press1 day 18 hrs ago | 4365 views | 11 | 22 | | ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Talk about a wild drive: barreling a stolen police vehicle on a frozen river in western Alaska while firing rounds from an officer's semiautomatic rifle.

Police in the commercial hub community of Bethel arrested a 24-year-old local man after the SUV was found abandoned about 10 miles from town.

Charles Chaney Jr. is charged with vehicle theft. Bethel Police Chief Larry Elarton said Wednesday other charges are pending against Chaney and three possible accomplices.

The vehicle was stolen Tuesday evening while Officer Jerry Herrod spent a few minutes inside a home working on a case, Elarton said. Inside the marked SUV were a rifle, a speed radar gun and the officer's gear, including his gloves. Herrod left the car running because of the cold, but didn't know if he left it unlocked or if the locking mechanism failed as it had in the past.

Police quickly spread word of the theft to nearby villages along the Kuskokwim River.

Greg Larson, a village public safety officer in Napaskiak, was among those notified. Within minutes of hanging up the phone, he heard gunfire.

He ran over to the Kuskokwim, which is used as a road in the region not linked by a road system. A half-mile away, a vehicle was going in circles on the river, lights flashing, with a four-wheeler close behind. Larson could hear sirens blaring and loud hollering.

"And I knew it was the stolen patrol car," he said.

Standing at the edge of the frozen river, he called Bethel police while the vehicles headed downriver toward the village of Napakiak. Elarton said authorities believe Chaney, who was out on bail on an unrelated assault charge, was alone in the SUV.

Police also notified Alaska State Troopers, who sent out a plane to search for the SUV. Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said the pilot radioed area villages, warning people to stay inside. He then spotted the patrol car on the river.

"The lights were flashing at the time, then they went off," Ipsen said. The pilot lost sight of the vehicle.

Elarton said the ice was unsteady in places after recent temperatures rose above freezing. So officers gingerly set out on snowmobiles, and the police chief and another officer took the lightest patrol truck in the department.

"It was definitely different," said Elarton, who is in his second year of living in Bethel after working as a sheriff in Colorado's Washington County and for police in San Diego. "You don't do this in San Diego - driving on an ice road."

Meanwhile, a village officer in Napakiak reported encountering Chaney - whom he identified - and another man on a four-wheeler, which held the radar gun, police said. Police tracked down Chaney's address, where authorities say they found the four-wheeler. Inside, police said they saw Herrod's gloves in plain view and interviewed two women and two men, including Chaney, who was arrested.

While the occupants were being interviewed, the patrol vehicle was found between Napaskiak and Oscarville. Police said numerous expended rounds were found on its floor, seats and dashboard. There was no damage to the SUV, but one of its high-beam lights was out, which might have hampered the search, Elarton said.

"A vehicle with one headlight might appear to be a snowmobile," he said. "So our attention would not be drawn to it."

Corrections officers in Bethel declined to say Wednesday evening if Chaney was still in custody or what his bail was, and it was unknown if he had an attorney

Patriots defeated

The West Anchorage Eagles opened a three-game road trip to the Interior by posting a 10-2 victory over the North Pole Patriots on Thursday night at the Polar Ice Center.

Dylan Longoria and Tyler Keturi scored goals for the Patriots, who host East Anchorage at 7 tonight at Polar Ice.

Other details of Thursday night’s game were not available.

The Patriots registered a 10-2 win against the Kenai Kardinals to advance to the title contest where they will face the powerful Dimond Lynx of Anchorage tonight.

North Pole opened the tournament with an 8-0 triumph against the Palmer Moose on Thursday.

Vance Bridgman continued his torrid scoring pace on Friday with three goals and four assists to earn most valuable player honors. He had five goals in Thursday night’s win.

Dylan Longoria registered two goals and four assists in the victory. Hank Parra, Tyler Bunch and Tyler Keturi each had a goal and assist.

Dylan Canoy and Alex Tilman had goals, and Jordan Pascoe picked up an assist. The Patriots had 50 shots on goal.

Josh Fine turned in another strong effort in goal for North Pole, stopping 17 of 19 shots to earn his second straight win.

Vance Bridgman scored five goals and netminder Josh Fine registered a shutout to lead the Patriots to an 8-0 win against the Palmer Moose during the first round of the eight-team tournament.

Bridgman scored in every period, netted a hat trick in the second and posted power-play and short-handed tallies to lead the Patriots into Friday’s semifinal round against the Kenai-Houston winner.

Austin Wood, Jordan Pascoe and Hank Parra also scored goals for the Patriots. North Pole outshot Palmer 51-28. Dylan Longoria had four assists, while Tyler Keturi and Alex Lemelin each had one.

Fine stopped 28 shots to earn player of the game honors.

In other first-round action, Dimond skated to a 7-1 win against Colony and Wasilla blanked Bartlett 8-0.

Cam and I had such fun while all the rest were gone...a great bonding moment for us! We went grocery sopping then we took some toys to trade for new toys to Once upon a child...Cam came out with a new puzzle and a new tractor! Great place to buy/trade clothes...not that good for trading toys though. oh well. then we came home and took a nap...I know not exciting but still nice! After nap time I surprised Cam by having all the halloween stuff up! That was exciting! then we built the new puzzle and went skating...after returning home we made homemade tomoato soup from our magical cookbook (complete with magic wand)popcorn and watched a movie. After the movie we put together our sleepover spots...me on the couch Cam on the cot next to me....read books and slept! This morning we started the day with french toast, cartoons, puzzles and are getting ready to go to Creamers Field hopefully with Sanoe!

Well they played the Minnesota Elite 16 Black team (they differentiate because there is also a Minnesota Elite 16 White team) It wasa tough game to say the least. 0-0 after the first with us getting 3 penalties and they got 1. The second period they scored one goal and we had one penalty against their two penalties. The third period they scored again and we pulled our goalie, unfortunately this brought another goal from them. We had three penalties this period to their none. All and all a well played game considering they were quite a bit bigger than we were...as an example they had one guy that was 6'4" and 210!!!!! Another game tomorrow....

Cameron created a new game..."sportsware". Its a fighting game on the trampoline...there were a lot of odd stretches before they begin. Things like elbow stretches, both single and double, upside down spiderman stretches.....then the battle began! There was the "roundhouse smack", the "wicked wheelbarrow", and the "old bridge move" just to name a few! After we followed it up with two runs in the go karts in North Pole...loads of fun!

Fairbanks hockey lasses headed to Ireland

FAIRBANKS — Though the prep, college and junior hockey seasons are finished in Fairbanks, there’s at least one team in town that’s still kicking.

Team Alaska, a women’s team started by Debbie Kissinger, will travel across the Atlantic Ocean for a four-team tournament on May 23-24 in Dundalk, Ireland.

The team of 13 features three generations of Alaska hockey women. Joy McDonald, who started girls’ hockey in Fairbanks, will travel with the team as manager. Three of her daughters — Kissinger, Sheri Anderson and Kris Lyle — will play in the tournament, billed as the first women’s tournament in Ireland. Grandaughter Jenya Anderson also plays on the team.

Other members of the team include Julie Aarhus, Mandy Booth, Toni Brewer, Irene Cerra, Gayle Garrigues, Lucy Keturi, Debbie Kissinger, Jann Laiti, Erin Martsolf, and Kim Wood.

“I came for the cool jersey,” joked Garrigues, a member of the “O-5” line, composed of the ladies age 50 and older on the team.

While the cost of traveling to Ireland might have deterred some players, Kissinger thinks it might be a factor in the high average age of their team. With women from age 18 to “50-plus,” Team Alaska players average 40 years old and about 15 years of hockey experience.

A look at some of the opposing team’s rosters, though, shows that while the Irish and Scottish teams might have an advantage with youth — some players come in at just 13 years old — Team Alaska definitely owns the experience category.

The journey began when Kissinger received an e-mail asking if she would be able to put a team together for the tournament.

“I just asked everyone to play, and this is what turned up,” she said in the locker room after a scrimmage last week.

“It is the nicest group, and we have had so much fun so far,” Kissinger added.

One of the team’s youngest members, Julie Aarhus, was excited about Guinness. She spoke of a documentary she watched about the 250th anniversary of the famous dark beer. At 19, and the second-youngest player, Aarhus will be able to legally drink the brew in Ireland.

“We’re well supervised because we have like five moms (on the team),” joked Garrigues, before saying she’s not playing babysitter.

Team Alaska’s competition in the two-day tournament includes the Dundalk Bulls Ladies, Belfast Vixens, and the Scottish Ladies.

The tournament doesn’t appear to have an official name, but aspires to become an annual event.

All of the proceeds are going toward cervical cancer research in Ireland.

Team Alaska heads to Ireland on May 21. The short tournament gives the Alaskans a chance to see some of the sights while there. Some team members are returning on May 28, but others are staying a week longer.

The team rented a bus and plan on heading to Giant’s Causeway, a natural wonder consisting of mostly hexagonal columns of basalt. They also might see some castles. Most of their sightseeing will be in North Ireland, but they plan to hit the south end of the island as well.
